“League of Legends” events are followed by millions of players
Imagine one day seeing a “League of Legends” tournament at the Olympic Games. Even if this idea seemed ludicrous a couple of years ago, Riot Games has begun discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bring competitive gaming as an official sport.
With the boom of titles like “League of Legends”, this idea does not seem so farfetched. Furthermore, the MOBA game, alongside 6 other online multiplayer franchises, will be featured in the 2022 Asian Games. This is a first milestone on the road to seeing esports as an official Olympic sport.
The process of seeing esports being added as an Olympic competition will probably take a long time. However, seeing enthusiasm around events like the Worlds of “League of Legends” could prompt the IOC to consider the viability of competitive gaming.
