Twitch has seen a rise in hate raids over the last couple of months

Streamers of Twitch staged a virtual walkout to voice their outrage over hate raids that promote racist, sexist and homophobic abuse on the streaming platform.

The extent of the protest remains unclear but it is estimated that thousands of channels did not stream on Wednesday.

In recent months, the phenomenon of hate raids has been making life increasingly hard for minority users of Twitch. The protest organised using the hashtag #ADayOffTwitch was intended to get the platform to do more to protect streamers from attacks.

In response, Twitch plans to meet with some of its ambassadors to deal with the issue. It is also planning to implement special tools to locate and ban accounts that promote hateful speech.
