Play the New York Times crosswords on Instagram

Gone are the days when one absolutely needs to buy a paper copy of the New York Times to play its cult crossword game. The puzzle can now be played using augmented reality on Instagram!

Running on the newspaper since 1942, the New York Times crosswords have recently gone high-tech. Fans of the puzzle can now attempt a new version of the game on the Instagram account of the news outlet. The New York Times has deployed an augmented reality technology that allows people to play in their Story. For instance, users of the app can access a trial of the game called “Mini Crosswords 12/22”. To solve it, players need to tilt their smartphone camera to try and find the right angle in order to re-assemble the shattered words.

Some users on Twitter commented that the augmented reality feature of the game is made for a technical challenge. Finding the correct perspective to shift the letters in place is not as easy as it seems. Nonetheless, the innovative approach to the crosswords is worthy of appreciation and may even serve as a fitting prompt to make the younger generation more interested in the classic game.
