"Viola the Bird" : the video game that will turn you into a musician

There are plenty of applications to help beginners progress in their music learning journey. The latest one called "Viola the Bird" will allow them to familiarize themselves with a unique instrument.

This application called "Viola the Bird" will enable anyone to get started or improve their cello skills through a series of playful exercises. No need to know music theory to play this game, nor do you have to know how to properly hold a bow. A cartoonish-looking ostrich with purple feathers will take care of that.

This bird-like character holds the cello and the bow while musical notes appear on the screen. The player must then move their mouse left and right to reproduce the chords with the dummy instrument. At first, maybe you will miss most of them. But as you will concentrate more on the music and rhythm, you will really get into the game.

"Viola the Bird" provides the opportunity to test improvisation skills with the help of an artificial intelligence-generated string orchestra. It is available for free on the Google Arts and Culture website.

To design "Viola the Bird," David Li collaborated with several cellists and violinists, including Ashok Klouda, Peter Wilson, and Elizabeth Goble. The result: a virtual music game that will delight both young and adult musicians.
