Tencent was given permission to publish a new video game

The Chinese government has finally granted tech giant Tencent its first video game licence in 18 months. This puts an end to the company’s dry spell which threatened its position as the world’s number one game publisher.

Last year, China underwent a crackdown on the gaming sector, even introducing laws to limit the number of hours during which children can play video games. Government officials have also frozen all approval of new titles.

In China, licences are compulsory to be published, and the last time Tencent was granted one was in May 2021. Now, however, Beijing has authorised the release of the studio’s latest action game called “Metal Slug: Awakening”.
