A “Nyan Cat” GIF was sold for $454,000

It is hard to believe that an animated GIF would ever be sold for actual money. However, Chris Torres, the creator of the “Nyan Cat” did it. He recently sold a one-of-a-kind version of his viral GIF for $454,000 on Foundation, an auction website for buying and selling digital goods.

The “Nyan Cat” GIF is one of the most popular Internet references. It is a meme of an animated flying cat with a Pop-Tart body. Over the past 10 years, it has been viewed and shared millions of times.

A couple of weeks ago, Chris Torres revamped his “Nyan Cat” GIF to be auctioned via a crypto-art platform. Digital art enthusiast and cat lovers engaged in a bidding war which ended with an anonymous user acquiring the art piece for 300ETH which converts to around $454,000.

For Torres, the fact that “Nyan Cat” went for such a high price is a testament of the fast-growing market for digital art.
