“Gran Turismo” will soon be on your screens!

Following the triumphs of "The Super Mario Bros Movie," "Uncharted," and "The Last Of Us," the entertainment industry has been captivated by video game adaptations on both the big and small screens in Hollywood. Indeed, the latter's fascination with video games is taking a self-referential twist in the case of 'Gran Turismo'.

When approached by Sony to direct a film centered around the hyper-realistic racing game series "Gran Turismo", Neill Blomkamp found himself initially perplexed.

Consequently, the movie's narrative took an alternative approach, embracing a meta concept. The plot is heavily influenced by a marketing stunt from 2008 when Sony and Nissan organised a competition, enabling top "Gran Turismo" gamers to demonstrate their skills on actual racetracks. This GT Academy initiative shifted PlayStation gamers from their virtual setups to real racecar cockpits.

As for the film's reception, it has been mixed, with the Guardian labeling it an "homage to product placement". Nonetheless, recreating the catastrophic crash was managed using "virtually 100 percent digital" technology due to its unique and notorious nature. The scene was meticulously aligned with video footage to ensure accuracy.

Adding complexity to the film's production, Hollywood's ongoing strikes posed challenges. Sony, in an unconventional move, thus decided to postpone the movie's theater release from its original date to August 25, opting to offer advance sneak previews to fans to generate buzz.
