Top five best-selling video game consoles: a historical overview

Video game consoles have captivated players since the 1970s, evolving into essential entertainment devices. Among the most notable, five consoles have particularly stood out, amassing over 700 million sales collectively.

The PlayStation 2, launched in 2000 by Sony, was a major hit, reaching approximately 160 million units sold. Its appeal was bolstered by backward compatibility and DVD playback, despite initial criticisms of its game library. Iconic titles like "Grand Theft Auto" and "Final Fantasy" eventually propelled it to unprecedented popularity.

The Nintendo DS, introduced in 2004, revolutionized handheld gaming with its dual screens and innovative features. It sold around 154 million units, driven by popular games such as "Animal Crossing" and "Pokémon".

The Nintendo Switch, released in 2017, has sold 143 million units. Its versatility as a home and portable console, coupled with hits like "The Legend of Zelda" and "Animal Crossing: New Horizons", contributed to its success.

Meanwhile, the Game Boy, with over 118 million units sold, and the PlayStation 4, with 117 million units, have also made significant impacts in gaming history. The Game Boy popularized titles like "Pokémon", while the PlayStation 4 excelled with games such as "The Last of Us".

In summary, these consoles not only shaped the gaming industry but also created lasting memories for millions of players worldwide.
