From gaming to career: how video games are shaping the future of tech jobs

Gaming : Is your teen’s favorite hobby the pathway to a lucrative career?

In today's rapidly evolving job market, traditional career paths are no longer the only routes to success. What may start as a simple hobby for your teenager could potentially develop into a lucrative career.

Many parents know the sight all too well: teenagers glued to screens, often immersed in video games. What might appear as mere entertainment could, however, pave the way to a high-paying career. A study from Rutgers University suggests that gaming might be preparing young people for lucrative jobs in tech.

If you've ever thought your child was wasting time on video games or setting up their computer, this study might change your mind. Conducted over three years with 43 students from Ivy Tech Community College, the research found that skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork—honed through gaming—are in high demand in fields like technology and engineering.

The video game industry itself is rapidly expanding, with game developers earning up to $104,420 annually. Experts urge parents to support their children's tech-related hobbies, as these interests can lead to rewarding careers. With the IT job market expected to grow by 25% to 32% by 2032, fostering these skills could be a smart investment in their future.
