Recent research shows video games can effectively raise awareness about the refugee crisis

Do you believe that video games can increase awareness of refugee crisis?

Recent research indicates that video games have the potential to significantly raise awareness about the global refugee crisis.

Indeed, recent research led by Elena Shliakhovchuk, conducted at the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain and published in the journal Information Technologies and Learning Tools, has shed light on the impactful role of educational video games in raising awareness about the refugee crisis. The study underscores that these interactive digital experiences are not only entertaining but also serve as powerful tools for education and empathy-building.

The study involved 78 Ukrainian participants who played the educational video game "Against All Odds" for 45 to 60 minutes. Results showed that participants not only enjoyed the gaming experience but also reported a better understanding of the challenges refugees face. Additionally, participants expressed increased empathy towards refugees and a greater motivation to help those in need.

For instance, participants have described feeling a range of emotions, from fear to empathy, while playing these games. One participant shared, "I felt fear, horror, terror. This game really worried me. I felt like a refugee, and it was very frightening". Such experiences foster a deeper understanding of the hardships faced by refugees, which can lead to increased empathy and a more nuanced perspective on their circumstances.
