Loot boxes can confuse gamers in paying more for in-game content

Twenty European consumer organisations have condemned the business methods of game developers for their questionable practices regarding microtransactions often targeted at children and teenagers.

These organisations have sent a formal notice to several publishers including Electronic Arts, known as the popular “FIFA” franchise. This game, for instance, has a mode called “Ultimate Team” which allows gamers to create a team using cards. However, to get a high-quality team faster, they need to buy loot boxes which will provide them with random characters. These loot boxes, though, can only be obtained with virtual currency which itself has to be acquired with real money.

Going through two different payment options have been shown to confuse players. Thus, these consumer organisations are asking that publishers include the real amount of money used while exchanging for loot boxes. This should avoid young gamers from making rash decisions when playing.
