Final Fantasy’s rich storytelling and colourful characters have made it one of the top-selling game franchises

Final Fantasy, the iconic video game franchise known for its captivating narratives and steampunk airships, has enthralled fans and garnered critical acclaim for over three decades. Following the much-anticipated arrival of Final Fantasy XVI, here are five key aspects to understand about this immensely successful Japanese series.

From its humble beginnings on Nintendo's original console in 1987, Final Fantasy has evolved from 2D monster battles into real-time combat gameplay, while blending fantasy tropes with sci-fi elements. The shift to Sony's PlayStation with Final Fantasy VII in 1997 proved pivotal, propelling the franchise to new heights of popularity with its immersive 3D graphics and captivating storyline.

The series has also been lauded for its exceptional soundtracks, often performed in classical concerts. However, film adaptations such as "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" received mixed reviews. In contrast, the franchise successfully explored online multiplayer games, starting with Final Fantasy XI in 2002 and later revitalizing Final Fantasy XIV with a dedicated fan base.

Ahead of the Final Fantasy XVI release, players have had a taste of the game's demo, praised as a modern action-adventure influenced by the likes of "Game of Thrones" and Western fantasy classics. Producer Naoki Yoshida aimed for a more mature experience, incorporating explicit content and graphic violence. The ongoing evolution of Final Fantasy continues to captivate gamers worldwide.
